Etymology

Katie is the english diminutive of Kate, which itself is a diminutive of Katherine From the Greek name Αικατερινη (Aikaterine). However the etymology of the roots are debated. It could be derived from:

• The earlier Greek name ‘Εκατερινη (Hekaterine), which came from ‘εκατερος (hekateros) meaning "each of the two"
• The name of the goddess Hecate, the goddess of associated with witchcraft, crossroads, tombs, demons and the underworld, from the Greek ‘Εκατη (Hekate), possibly derived from ‘εκας (hekas) meaning "far off"
• The Greek word αικια (aikia) "torture"
• A Coptic name meaning "my consecration of your name"
• It was also associated with Greek καθαρος (katharos) "pure", with Latin spelling being changed from Katerina to Katharina to reflect this.
