The village

The Winter Village is an area only accessible during the Winter Festival event in Star Stable Online. It is one of the few areas accessible by all players, regardless of Star Rider status.

History

On October 22, 2017, the SSO team hinted that the Christmas event would be getting an update from its past iterations.[1]

In the November 29, 2017 update, the village was released. While old Christmas quests were removed, there were new quests in a compact area, so players would not have to travel all around Jorvik to complete quests.[2]

The 2018 and 2019 iterations of the village were the same as previous years, with no major additions.

In the December 2, 2020 update, some of the village's graphics were updated. Santa was removed from his usual location and added to the Jorvik City Mall, and a new Winter Village introduction questline was added with the baby yule goat. The Ice Boutique was removed, but players could trade Warm Wishes for rewards with a vendor.[3] The original Winter Village questline did not return.

On December 1, 2021, the winter event returned, this time with a completely updated Winter Village.[4]

There were no major additions to the village in the 2022 event.

In the 2023 event, a Winter Magic collection activity was added.[5]

Accessibility

To access the Winter Village, players must have finished the game's introduction questline along with the baby yule goat's qustline. The baby yule goat should appear near the player when they first login during the Winter Festival event. The village can be entered by talking to the capran on the sleighs at most settlements and stables. The sleighs are marked with the "Festival Transport" marker on the map when it is enabled.

Appearance

The Winter Village is in a snowy landscape in perpetual nightfall where the stars and an Aurora Borealis are visible. The village is covered in Christmas decorations and lights.

The village itself has wooden cabins and buildings of various sizes. There are lots of shops, a café, and a large Yule tree with daily gifts underneath that players can collect. Next to the village is a large frozen lake that the player can traverse. There are multiple species of wildlife including penguins, deer, and bears, which can be found in the wilderness surrounding the village and lake.

There is also a dressage arena with show jumping prop options outside the village.

Residents

Santa

Santa was previously located at his home in the market and was available for some quests. He now only appears on the stage in the mall during the Winter Festival event, although his house is still present at the village.

Caprans

The caprans are the main residents of the village. They run stores, host races, and can be seen walking and standing throughout the area. In the original Winter Village questline, the caprans involved were Honey, Krangle, Pongle, and Zingle. The named caprans still present in the village are Crumble, Pickle, Bungle, Jingle, Fumble, Crackle, Jumble, and Alaska Jones. Most caprans wear a green sweater and green Santa hat.

Others

In addition to the caprans, some other characters appear at the village, such as humans, yule goats, various animals, and winter magic horses.

Features and Activities

Shops

There are many shops in the village that sell winter and Christmas clothes, tack, and pets. Additionally, there are multiple exclusive winter-themed magic horses sold at the village.

The Ice Boutique

Besides the regular shops, there was also a small ice cave in the market. In this cave, players could exchange their Christmas Wishes for exclusive clothing, gear, accessories, and a special reindeer powder with infinite uses during the event. The Ice Boutique was removed from the game in the 2020 event and replaced with the Warm Wishes (and later Winter Tokens) exchange function. In 2021's Winter Village update, it was completely absent—in its place were photo background props.

Rideable Animals

The Winter Village has multiple animals other than the player's usual horses to ride.

Reindeer Powder

There was previously a stable located in the market where players could purchase transformation powders for their horse, which will transform them into a reindeer in one of the three colors depending on what powder is purchased (except for one, which had to be swapped for in the Ice Boutique and can be used an unlimited amount of times during the Christmas event). In 2020 and following years, the Holiday Reindeer powder could no longer be bought. Reindeer powder is now only accessible through Soul Riding rewards and if the player has any left over from previous years. Although it can no longer be obtained, the Ice Boutique powder is still usable during the Winter Festival event.

These powders are available in:

  • Brown (Ice Boutique exclusive)
  • Grey
  • Rudolph (brown with a red nose)
  • White

Animals

After completing the daily quest "Aid Kits First" given by the ranger Todd in the village, the player will be able to trade their horse for another animal to ride. They can be taken out of the village if the player leaves. They have no time limit, unlike the previous reindeer powders.

The available animals are:

  • Moose
  • Buck and doe deer
  • Bear
  • Yule goat

Winter Magic

The Winter Magic collection activity takes place at the Winter Village. After talking to the capran Fumble, the player will be able to collect magical snowflakes and complete various other activities to earn rewards and restore winter magic to the village.

New Year's Eve Event

The New Year's Eve celebration takes place at the small frozen lake to the east of the village. At the celebration, players can launch fireworks and purchase party clothes and tack. There is also a fireworks show at the start of each hour. This minor event is usually added in the last update of the year and stays for the rest of the Winter Festival event.

Trivia

  • Singing ice sounds can be heard on the large ice lake.
  • Although the village mainly sells magic horses, there have been some non-magic horses sold temporarily at the village: a Jorvik Friesian variation in 2020,[6] the Tennessee Walkers in 2022,[7] and one variation each of the Shire and Icelandic horses in 2023.[8]
  • The Winter Village was the first event location outside of Jorvik to be added. It is the only event-exclusive location to have an associated star collection.
