Galloper's Keep
Galloper's Keep is an area only accessible during the Halloween Event. It is one of the few areas accessible by all players.
History
In the October 24, 2018 update, the Keep was added as a brand new area for Halloween activities. The Keep released new quests and races in a compact area, so players would not have to travel all around Jorvik to complete quests.[1]
The Keep returned for the 2019 event as well.[2]
It also returned for the 2020 event, this time without the ghosts which gave Soul Shards. They were replaced by Vortexes in Jorvik. There was also a new portal introduced which leads to the Haunted Trail Ride, and a new island housing the Tower of Regrets in which Galloper Thompson was imprisoned.[3]
In the 2021 event, it returned, with no major changes from the previous year.[4]
In the 2022 event, the cauldron was overhauled: instead of throwing in Soul Shards, now the player could find items around the Keep to throw in. This year, the portals started off closed, needing Soul Shards to unlock and use them. The sitting area on the main island was moved onto a new island, accessible from the top level of the main tower.[5] Quests were also added during the final week of the event where the player must bring ghosts back to the Keep before the portals close.[6]
The 2023 event had all of the portals accessible from the start due to feedback from players.[7] A Witch's Gambit quest was also added, functionally identical to Galloper's Gambit but allowing for more rewards.[8]
In October 2025, a new island was added to the Keep.
Accessibility
To access Galloper's Keep, players must have finished the quest where Justin Moorland gives them a brush, a hoof pick, and a bucket. After that, green portals surrounded by a large stone arch and fog will be placed in practically every major area in Jorvik. Players simply have to run into the portal to be transported to the Keep. When the player first logs on during the event, Poe the Crow will appear at their Home Stable location and guide them to a portal.
Appearance
The Keep is a dark and spooky set of small islands floating in the sky with no apparent ground underneath and is surrounded by perpetual fog and nightfall. The large main island connecting the smaller islands appears as a broken-down castle tower of black stone bricks. Within the middle of this island is a large cauldron. Galloper Thompson, the character for whom the Keep is named, and his horse, Morrigan, can be seen watching over the tower from the top floor. Outside the tower on the main island are multiple portals leading to different races and activities. Northeast of the main island lies a small stable where the player can purchase the Halloween magical horses and pets. There are multiple other small islands: an island with the portal back to Jorvik, an island with the Tower of Regrets and the pumpkin-collecting minigame portal, and another island that is accessible from the main tower with areas to sit down. In October 2025, a new island was added to the Keep : the Isle of the Threshold. Located at the very North of the Keep, this island features dark blue weeping willows, spider fountains, a mausoleum, a pet cemetery, a waterfall and a portal to free souls trapped in the Keep. The island can be accessed by taking the secret bridge behind Galloper, when approaching the wall, the bricks will form a bridge allowing the player to take them.
Shops
These shops are exclusive to Galloper's Keep, thus the Halloween event. Most shops are run by ghosts instead of the usual humans as in Jorvik. These shops include:
- Afterworldly Attire (newer items)
- Doomed Discount Shop (older discounted items)
- Masks Galore
- Miscreants Merch
- Soul Shard to Autumn Token exchange
- Token Goods (newest items for Autumn Tokens)
- Vintage Treasures (previous years' items)
Clothes, tack, and other items are sold within these shops. Most shops accept Star Coins and Jorvik Shillings, however Token Goods only accepts Autumn Tokens.
Residents
Galloper Thompson
Galloper Thompson can be found atop his horse, looking over the cauldron on the second floor of the keep. He does not interact with the player directly outside of quests.
Ghosts
The ghosts of Galloper's Keep appear as humanoid white transparent specters. The ghosts from 2018 to 2020 died in a way that they could not find rest as their Soul Shard still remained in the mortal realm of Jorvik. They gave players hints to the locations of their shards so that they could move on and no longer be tethered to Galloper's realm. In 2020 and the following years, these ghosts are no longer present and were replaced by the Vortexes in Jorvik. However, other ghosts can still be found, such as Kasper and Karin who both help the player in the Keep. Other ghost residents are The Tormented One, who gives the player the Galloper's Gambit quest, the Frightened Specter who gives the player the Witch's Gambit quest, Lucy who asks the player to compete in a championship each day, Justine who asks for potions daily and the Registrar, who tasks the player with finding lost ghosts during the last week of the event.
Activities
Portals
- Old Galloper's Chilling Journey hosted by The Hesitant Rider
- The Golden Apple of Scarecrow Hill hosted by Conspicuous Scarecrow
- Daily pumpkin hunt in Goldenhills Valley hosted by an Enchanted Pumpkin
- The Haunted Trail Ride hosted by Poe the Crow
- Dungeons and Pumpkins hosted by Eve
Quests
A questline with Linda which explores Galloper Thompson's story is available each year. It can be replayed every year even if the player has already completed it before. The quests can be started by talking to Linda outside the portal near Old Jasper’s Barn in Moorland, and takes place in Galloper's Keep, the Harvest Counties, the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur, Silverglade and Hollow Woods, meaning that the questline is only available for Star Riders.
Scott Buttergood has a questline where he asks the player to check the Haunted Trail Ride for a werewolf he claims to have encountered. Once completed, this questline unlocks a daily quest where he tasks the player to take pictures of cryptids in Goldenhills Valley, Hollow Woods or the valley of the Hidden Dinosaur in exchange for tokens. Although the original quest is available for everyone, the daily quest is for Star Riders only despite Scott being settled in Moorland.
During the final week of the Halloween event, the Registrar outside the Tower of Regrets will have a quest for the player each day to find a lost ghost in Jorvik and bring them back to the Keep. The quests accumulate and do not have to be completed the day they become available, except for the Tuesday one which must be completed before the event is over the following day. Some of the ghosts will be in locations that are only accessible to Star Riders.
Cauldron and Spell Book
In order to use the cauldron, the player must first complete Karin's quests to get it working again. The 2025 Halloween event introduced a new cauldron mechanic. The ingredients can be found around the Keep, changing locations every day. They include: Moss, Ghost Goo, Spider Eggs, Horse Hair, Ash, Wiggly Worm, Bee Balm, Rubia, Chamomile, and Soul Shards. Each ingredient has two properties, when combining two ingredients with the same property, a potion is created. This crafting mechanic costs one soul shard per recipe. The potions can be exchanged for tokens thanks to Justine, or used to craft an item from the spell book once the spell book page is recovered by the player. The spell book has the recipes to craft each item from the clothes and tack set of the year, but it will only share it and let the player craft once the page is found thanks to the riddle.
Before 2025, the cauldron consisted in throwing three random ingredients in the cauldron for randomized rewards such as powders, clothing and horse tack, items from the Haunted Trail Ride, or a pet. However, this previous mechanic only allowed the player to use the cauldron every 30 minutes.
Other Activities
The Trickster will go trick-or-treating in Jorvik with the player once a day. If the player matches their outfit with the day's theme, then they will earn more rewards. However this activity did not come back in 2025.
Galloper's Gambit and the Witch's Gambit are activities in which the player trades three Soul Shards for accepting the quest. After leaving the Keep, in under half an hour, a ghost will appear and chase them. If the player outruns the ghost for thirty seconds, they will earn more Soul Shards, but if they are caught they will lose the Soul Shards. The two quests can be accepted simultaneously.
Lucy has a daily quest to reward the player for participating in a championship, and Justine has a daily quest in which she asks the player for a specific potion in exchange for a token.
Trivia
- If a player jumps into the cauldron, they will be spit out and thrown to the upper level of the Keep in a short cutscene.
- Although the cauldron can typically only be used once per hour, if the player goes into their closet then it resets and can be used again.
- According to Kasper in the introduction tour, the island with the Tower of Regrets is called Tower Isle, and the sitting area island is called the Island of the Hopeful.
- On the Island of the Hopeful, the unlit candles can be lit if interacted with. However, they burn out again quickly.
