A blizzard seen from a distance

Blizzards are a special event phenomenon that only appear during the Winter Festival event, first introduced in 2022.[1]

Function

Blizzards appear in one of a few possible locations in Jorvik. Two are available each day, and they rotate each hour.[2] The blizzard is extremely large and hard to miss if the player is standing in an open area with a clear view of the sky. Once spotted, the player can travel to the location the blizzard is touching down on. Should a player not currently have access to the area that the blizzard is located at, they will have to wait until the blizzard reappears in an area accessible to them. The player must first complete the initial blizzard in Nilmer's Highland from the quest given in the Winter Village for the others to appear.

Once at the blizzard's location, the player can speak to Rowan Allaway and two other characters. The characters will each give the player one task to complete to help them, and upon completion, the player will get two Winter Tokens and a small amount of player XP for each quest. After completing both of them, the player can talk to Rowan again, and they will award the player an additional two tokens.

Inside the Blizzard

While inside the blizzard area, a snowstorm effect will appear on the screen, heavily reducing visibility. This appears regardless of whether the snow is toggled on or not. Additionally, there will be a countdown bar at the top of the screen that shows how much time is left before the blizzard ends.

NPCs and Tasks

Two of the following NPCs and their tasks can appear during a blizzard.

NPC Quest Notes
Rowan Find the lost supplies around the area. Only appears for the initial blizzard in Nilmer's Highland.
Rowan Find a snowed-in person somewhere in the area and shovel the snow away to get inside the building. This task allows access into some buildings that are otherwise not able to be entered by the player.
Idun Find the twins Hannibal and Alexander running around somewhere in the blizzard area. Upon finding them, dialogue choice does not matter—either will make them go back to Idun.
James Use a metal detector that appears on the minimap to locate lost items in the area. The metal detector will spin around randomly when not near an item, but start pointing toward the item when close to one. When the snow is turned off, the items' locations can be seen easily by the snowdrifts.
Landon/Scott Buttergood/Mary Find four lost sheep or donkeys somewhere in the area, depending on the character present. Uses the hot/cold mechanic. The animals have pre-set locations, and they will always appear in the same ones in each area.

Locations

Two blizzard locations are available each day. One blizzard is available at a time, and the location rotates between the two every hour. One blizzard will appear in a Star Rider-only area and the other in an area accessible for all players.[1][3]

Tips

  • It can be helpful to turn off the snow to make completing the tasks easier.
  • Turning on the Winter Festivities marker on the map will make a marker appear at the blizzard's location.

Trivia

  • In the 2022 event, blizzards were available twice a day, from 8:00 to 10:00 and from 17:00 to 19:00 server time.[1] In the 2023 event, this was changed to rotating between the two locations every hour.[2] In the 2022 event, players could also earn pieces from the Celebrity Ski Trip set, but no exclusive set pieces were awarded the following year.
  • The snowed-in person activity allows temporary access into locations that are usually unaccessible to the player: the Firgrove ranger cabin, Hermit's Cottage, and the shed in Hussar's Drop.
