Description
"The swirling seas around the island of Jorvik are teeming with magic and mystery, and from these waters emerged a formidable horse known as Proteus.
Legend has it that this territorial creature guards sunken treasure. Don’t let the prickly exterior fool you; this is a lovable curmudgeon. Sailors named the breed after the mythological sea god who could take many forms.
The origin of these horses is a mystery, but some whisper of a onece lush islet off the coast of South-East Jorvik, where magic horses roamed free. One day the land sunk into the ocean, leaving the horses without a home. The Proteus on Jorvik are believed to be descendants of the horses from this fabled islet.
Whether in its magical form or disguised to blend in with other horses, Proteus rides like the Appaloosa it resembles."
Unique Features
Color Changing
The Proteus is a magical horse with the special ability to change colors. When the player presses the "h" key or the magic horse icon on the horse's character sheet, the horse will change from its neutral colors to its natural (magic) colors and vice versa. The horse will not change colors during races or while the player is unmounted.
The Appy Amble
Note: The horse must reach level 7 to perform this gait.
As the Proteus shares its model with the Gen 3 Appaloosas, it can perform their special gait called the Appy Amble. To do the Appy Amble, the horse must be walking. The player then must hold down the 'Shift' key and then simultaneously hit either the up arrow or the 'W'. The horse will then begin to do the Appy Amble. During the Appy Amble, the horse cannot move to a faster gait or jump. To stop Ambling, simply slow your horse down like you would with any other.
Colors, Pricing, and Location
The Proteus is sold for 900 SC. It is sold by Gary Goldtooth and comes in one variation.
Note: This horse is released for limited periods of time and is not always in the game.

Trivia
- The Proteus uses the G3 Appaloosa model.
- The Proteus was released as a pair with Sedna.
- The Proteus, like most other Magic horses, cannot have its hairstyle changed.
- Despite appearing fish-like, the Proteus cannot swim any deeper in the water than any other horse breed in the game.
- The Proteus' magic coat is based on the Pterois volitans AKA the Red Lionfish, a venomous coral reef fish in the family Scorpaenidae. It is recognizable for its bright red and white stripes.
- The Proteus' neutral coat is also a nod to its striped origins, as it is a Zebroid (the hybrid offspring of a Zebra and any other equine). Even some Zebras can be born with few to no stripes.
- Ironically, there is another fish in the family Scorpaenidae called the Dendrochirus zebra, known commonly as the zebra turkeyfish or zebra lionfish, however its colors and patterns do not match as closely to the Proteus' magic coat as the Red Lionfish does.
- The name Proteus (/ˈproʊtiəs, -tjuːs/; Ancient Greek: Πρωτεύς, Prōteus), is derived from Greek πρῶτος (protos) meaning "first". It is the name of the prophetic god of the sea, rivers and oceanic bodies of water in Greek mythology. Many myths regard him as the "Old Man of the Sea" (hálios gérôn), but he is most well known as the god of "elusive sea change", which suggests the constantly changing nature of the sea or the liquid quality of water.
- While Zebroid hybrid "breeds" are achievable in real-life, the Proteus' coat is clearly the effects of magic and not breeding.
