The Criollo is a horse breed available in Star Stable Online and Star Stable: The Summer Rider.

Timeline

Date Development
August 23, 2024 SSO announces the Criollo will be released in-game in 2025 and asked for the players' expectations for the breed in an Instagram Story.[citation needed]
October 8, 2024 SSO reveals the first seven coat variations for the Criollo on Instagram.[1]
December 17, 2024 A sneak peek of two of the coat variations is shared by Giulia Archeorider and reposted by Star Stable Online on Instagram.[2]
January 13, 2025 A trailer of the Criollo is dropped on SSO's social media accounts.[3]
January 15, 2025 Seven variations of the Criollo are released in Star Stable Online.[4]
February 26, 2025 Two additional variations of the Criollo are added to the game.[5]

Description

"Do you find yourself performing endless ranch chores? Are you seeking an intelligent training partner for Western-style and jumping competitions? A companion for the long and dusty trails? The Criollo has you covered!

This breed can take on any task while delighting you with a gentle, curious, and playful personality. The Criollo's special gait is Pace, and its special trick is a Double Spin."

Unique Features

The Pace

Note: The horse must reach level 7 to perform this gait.

While most breeds in SSO only have five gaits, the Criollo has six. This special gait is called the "Pace". To perform the Pace, the horse must be walking or trotting. The player then must hold down the 'Shift' key and then simultaneously hit either the up arrow or the 'W' key. The Criollo will then begin to perform the Pace. During the Pace, the horse cannot move to a faster gait or jump. To stop performing the Pace, simply slow your horse down like you would with any other. While the horse is in the pace gait, the player will hold the reins with one hand.

The Double Spin

Note: The horse must reach level 7 to perform this move.

The Criollo can perform a special move called the Double Spin. The animation can be activated by pressing the spacebar, but only when standing still, otherwise the horse will jump instead of performing the move.

Trivia

  • The term "criollo" is a Spanish word meaning "a person descended from European parents living in the Americas," it is a loanword from the Portuguese word "crioulo," meaning "a white person born in the colonies; a slave born in the house of his master; or a black person born in the colonies."[6]
    • The Criollo Horse descends from Spanish breeds (particularly Andalusians), making its name quite fitting as an American breed descended from a European one.[7]
  • The liver chestnut sabino Criollo's coat is modeled after a popular stallion, named Prestígio Do Itaó.[8][9]
    • While the horse in SSO is a chestnut, the real Prestígio Do Itaó is a black dun sabino (called lobuna oviera negra).
  • Manchado is a rare white marking that has only occurred in horses bred in Argentina (it has been recorded in Argentinian Arabians, Criollos, Thoroughbreds, and Hackney Horses).[10] Very little genetic research has been done on the markings, but it is thought to have only been recorded in Argentina due to a mixture of the country's fascination with horse color and its classification as well as its possibility of being caused by a recessive mechanism.[11]
  • Mud knots are tied in horses' tails to keep the tail clean and prevent it from getting tangled. The technique is commonly used by vaqueros/cowboys.[12][13]
  • The pace gait is one of the only times when the player will ride one-handed in the game.
